Olympic Efforts & Velvet Slippers

I had a stop over in our country's grain belt, where I met up again with friend and blogger Mister Midwester.  Known for his generosity, he treated me to a pair of horsey cufflinks to ease the pain of the oppressive summer heat in his city.  


A drive the following day put me front and center with the Olympic trials where great athletic hopefuls pounded their hearts out without the horrible overly produced layer of garbage that has made the televised Olympics difficult to sit through.

Back home in Boston the next day, a catalog had arrived.  The prices seem to have come down a bit.

After sushi, I was given a cookie containing this fortune:



"Wrong on all three" laughed my colleague, so I stuck him with the check while he was in the bathroom.

  1. For years I've been trying to explain to people why I don't like the olympics and you've nailed it. I'd add commercialization to the assessment as well, but that may just be a symptom of over production. I'll have to mull that over.

    1. *Randall: Your are very correct - the commercialization is just as bad. The production I'm talking about specifically is the hyperbolic high-stakes staging mixed with "inspiring" back stories on the American athletes. Once I hear the brass of an Aaron Copland composition in the background leading into a voice over with shots of the featured athlete standing "focused" or "serious", I tune out. "Yes, Bob Costas, they ALL have inspiring stories of singular dedication, that's why it's the Olympics. Now can I please watch them compete?"

  2. Still love the Oylmpics despite the Bob Costas profiles. Still love your blog because the absence of "you gotta have". Looking forward to the onslaught of posts. Next time, I hope the Avondale/Riverside visit is without the weather drama. Try the Casbah when you're down here again. Bring on your posts!
